What is Café Luso?

The Café Luso established in Lisbon in 1927 at nr.31 of Avenida da Liberdade and later in 1939 moved to the Palace Brito Freire in the Bairro Alto borough. This Palace built in the late 17th Century for an aristocratic family, survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1755 and has remained almost untouched up to today.

Why is there a double bass in Café Luso?

At this level, the double bass has become a habitual presence in Café Luso, also of special visual effect. From the centenary crossing of cultures that secularly converged in Lisbon, port city, during the nineteenth century takes this melodic and rhythmic consistency this new musical genre: Fado.

What instruments are used in Café Luso?

Instrumentally, it is indispensable the acoustic presence of the Portuguese Guitar and the viola, with the fadista in the center. At this level, the double bass has become a habitual presence in Café Luso, also of special visual effect.

The cello was the primary bass instrument, and the double bass is called that because it’s about twice the size (though it’s actual shape takes cues from both the violin and viol families).
